The Television Academy’s Advocacy Committee invites members to:
Human Rights: Stories, Facts, and Case Studies to Inspire Your Storytelling
Human rights feature in every genre of entertainment. They are at the core of the human experience – from the water you drink, to the person you love, your freedom to speak, and the safety of your child.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is an independent, international organization that's part of a vibrant movement to uphold human dignity and advance the cause of human rights for all. HRW's narrative shift work makes a case for change and hope, offering decades of research and compelling case studies as a resource to storytellers. In partnership with the creative community, they seek to reframe human rights messaging in ways that build more consensus.
On Tuesday, June 11, hear from Alison Leal Parker, deputy director of HRW's US Program, who helps to guide work on domestic human rights issues, from racial justice to immigration and border control; and Ida Sawyer, director of HRW's Crisis, Conflict, and Arms Division, who oversees a team of researchers as they respond to global crises in real time, from Sudan to Haiti to Ukraine.
We are living through an extraordinarily turbulent period with deep shifts underway. Every storytelling project can create significant impact while building unforgettable characters and storylines that drive tune in. This talk will be a chance to envision a bold vision for the future we could build if we embrace human rights for all.
Note: The evening's case studies will focus on the U.S./Mexico border, East Africa, and the Caribbean.
